The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, a platform consisting of approximately 80 organizations, has appointed Dr. Y.Z Ya’u as its Convener during a strategy meeting held on Thursday, June 8, 2023. In addition to the convener, two co-conveners were also elected.
Dr. Y.Z Ya’u, a highly respected human rights activist with a notable track record, currently serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in Kano.
He played a significant role in the fight against military dictatorship during the 1990s and previously served as an alternate chair of the Situation Room from 2018 to 2020.
Joining Dr. Ya’u as co-conveners are Mimidoo Achakpa, representing the Women Rights to Education Programme (WREP) based in Abuja, and Franklin Oloniju, representing the Life & Peace Development Organisation (LAPDO) in Akure.
The election also resulted in the formation of a new steering committee, which represents the six geo-political zones of Nigeria and various thematic areas. The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) will continue to act as the secretariat for the Situation Room.
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room is a coalition of civil society organizations that aims to promote credible and transparent elections, good governance, and respect for human rights in Nigeria.
