Engr. Y.Z. Ya’u, Executive Director of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has said the advent of social media has revolutionized the way students learn and interact in Nigeria. With the click of a button, students can connect with educators, researchers, and peers from around the world, boosting a global learning community.
Ya’u made the assertion today during a Facebook Connect event titled “The Impact of Social Media on Progress: Fostering Entrepreneurship, Education, Unity, and Community Development” organized by the Kazaure Emirate, Jigawa State and held at Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic Kazaure.
According to Ya’u, Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become essential tools for educational development, providing students with access to a vast array of resources and information.
Y.Z elucidated that Social media has also enabled students to access educational materials and resources that were previously out of reach.
“Online educational platforms and resources such as online courses, e-books, and educational videos have made learning more accessible and convenient. Furthermore, social media has enabled students to collaborate and work on group projects, promoting teamwork and problem-solving skills” he added.
The Executive Director stressed that however, the impact of social media on educational development in Nigeria is not without its challenges. The proliferation of fake news and misinformation on social media has led to concerns about the credibility of online resources.
“Additionally, the distraction and addiction that social media can cause have led to concerns about the impact on students’ academic performance and mental health” Ya’u noted.
The Executive Director pointed that despite these challenges, the impact of social media on educational development in Nigeria is undeniable. Social media has opened up new opportunities for students to learn, connect, and collaborate.
Y.Z implored that as the use of social media continues to grow, it is essential for educators, policymakers, and students to harness its potential to improve educational outcomes and promote academic excellence in Nigeria.
“By leveraging social media effectively, Nigeria can bridge the educational gap and provide its students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century” Y.Z Ya’u noted.
Other notable speakers at the event include: Engr. Mustapha Habu Ringim, Founder/CEO of ENGAUSA GLOBAL TECH HUB and Malam Abubakar Bashir Usman from the Jigawa State Institute of Information Technology.
The event saw an award presentation to CITAD’s Executive Director, Y.Z Ya’u in recognition of his exceptional track records towards his relentless support and service to humanity.
