Nigeria will go to the polls to elect a new president in February. Buhari’s ruling APC will field its presidential candidate at a three-day convention starting on Monday.
Buhari has not yet named a successor when he steps down after eight years as allowed by the constitution but urged APC governors to back his choice.

Tinubu, a Lagos-based political leader, joined his party and Buhari’s party in 2013 to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), which ultimately gave Buhari victory, having lost the last three presidential elections.
In a speech on local television on Friday, the 70-year-old Tinubu told a party convention in Ogun State that he supported Buhari on the understanding that he would run for president in 2023.
“Now is my time, I am educated, I am an expert, I have been serving you (Buhari) for a long time, give me the presidency, it is my time,” Tinubu said.
“If I had not supported Buhari, he would not have become president.” A presidential spokesman has not yet commented.
Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are widely seen as the front-runners in the presidential run-off, with 23 candidates vying for the presidency.
