Group warns against Gender-Based Violence on Women during Guber polls

A non-governmental organization, Kasham Girls Women Youth and Community Development Network (KGWYCDN), has called for shunning all forms of Gender Based Violence against Women considering the already heated political atmosphere ahead of the March 18th Governorship/State House of Assembly Elections.

The tense atmosphere that the Organization presumed may seemingly hinder people from coming out to vote especially women of certain age brackets.

The Executive Director of KGWYCDN, Mrs Dinatu Emmanuel Ishaku made the call Today in Kano during a press briefing with Journalists.

She explained that it is important to draw attention as well as encourage the people to come out again to cast their votes in peaceful environments as they did in the just concluded February 25th Presidential election.

“It is vital to allow our women, female adolescents of voting age to exercise their civil rights in an environment where they feel safe, bearing in mind that any form of nuisance can possibly give room to any form of GBV against”

“It is worth noting that even aged women might be victims of sexual harassment, assault and any other form of violence during election unrest” Dinatu warned.

She also discouraged harassment of female adolescents that are of voting age while on their way to the polling unit and by extension putting up drama at the polling unit in order to seize the opportunity of unleashing all forms of violence against women.

Dinatu however, admonished the good people of Kano State to remember that the integrity of the state lies in their hands as individuals.

According to her “This integrity can only be preserved by safeguarding our girls, mothers, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers as they come out to vote. So I urge you all to go out and vote peacefully.”
